Happy Tails

Storm and Sky were on the Patriot Siberian Husky Rescue website for almost a year. They were nine year old siblings and the owners wanted them to be adopted together. I'm sure that most people thought "I don't want two dogs" or "I don't want old dogs". But they were perfect.

I have had puppies, and have watched them grow up, grow old and pass. While I love puppies, I was not ready for the chaos that comes with little puppies again; the destroyed shoes, the shredded curtains, the shredded carpets… I wanted dogs that were calm, settled and knew the rules. And, as I am older now, I cannot realistically make a 10 to 15 year commitment. But I could make a five year commitment. So I adopted Storm and Sky when they were nine years old.

My first surprise was that they were not calm at all!

Nine year old dogs have lots of energy and they could have dragged me like a sled if they had wanted to. I learned to walk faster than most people run. We hiked mountains and trails and had countless adventures. They loved the snow and the cold in Maine. Storm would sleep on the last patch of melting snow each Spring. My second surprise was that everyone loves a pair of huskies. It was so much fun when people stopped to pet them, commented on how beautiful they were, and told me about their dogs. An artist made a print of them and everyone wanted to take their picture.

Storm and Sky were little rock stars!

Storm and Sky were little rock stars!

Huskies age well. They remain beautiful into their golden years and many people were surprised when I told them how old they were. Even at 13, they looked like they were much younger. Of course, they both slowed down as they aged and became frail toward the end. But this is the commitment that we make: to care for them when they are young and strong as well as when they are old and frail. I find that my love for them grew stronger as they need more help. When Sky was no longer able to jump into the car, she would place her front paws on the seat and I would gently lift her haunches into the car. That's trust and teamwork. Old dogs are the best. Although was hard to lose them, I know that their last few years were filled with love, meat and exercise.

What more could they ask?

We'd like to share with you some stories of adopted dogs who've found happy homes through Patriot Siberian Husky Rescue...

Kai and Jin

Kai and Jin are living a new life, full of fun and adventure. After spending several months in a Rhode Island shelter, they will be awaiting Santa's arrival, together, in their new home! We couldn't be happier and I think the same applies to them. Look at those Husky smiles!

Freyja

Freyja was adopted in June of 2023. She was an older puppy of 7 months. She has found her forever home and is thriving. She's maturing into a very pretty grown dog. Her owner keeps us updated on her progress and says she's our "beautiful, loving, fun girl". We definitely agree!

Laika

I previously had rescued an 8-year old husky that I fell in love with. He was with me for three years before he passed from an aggressive cancer. When I was ready to get another dog, I knew that I wanted an older Husky. I found Patriot Siberian Husky Rescue and started looking at the available dogs. All these dogs deserve a good home but I had my heart set on meeting Laika. I was very hopeful that she would react well to me when meeting her. When we first met and she leaned into me to be petted I knew that she would be the one. I think she is happy in her new home. We go for walks in the state forest and she has a large yard (fenced) to run around in. Her tail is wagging and she loves to play with some of her old toys and some new ones that we got her. She still gets lots of treats and lots of love. I look forward to see how she is with water this summer and I can’t wait to see her in the snow next winter.

Murph

We are getting along beautifully, and he is a very good boy, but still very youthful. Reinforcement training session are underway. We are having a blast in New Hampshire and Vermont. We are getting settled, but working through anxiety issue when I leave. Also trying to find a better food that will take a little trial and error as he is not a big eater. Sadly pooping and peeing in the house regularly, but I think is fairly consistent with rehoming. But we'll figure out bathroom schedules and that will settle out.

Lucy

Lucy is such a love!!! She finally found her forever home with the Kelly clan. Lucy likes to hunt critters with her sister Aurora and go for jogs with her brother Bruin and her new mom Lynne. She now resides in North Carolina about a half hour north of where she used to live with her previous owners. All the dogs in her new neighborhood love her to pieces. Lucy is the sweetest, most loving dog we have ever encountered. We are so grateful to have her and have blessed her with a kind, loving home where she is spoiled rotten.

Kyzyl

Had you stopped by my home about 3 hours after Kyzyl arrived, you'd have thought he lived his entire life here. He is a wonderful blessing to Barbara and I. I have been exposing him to our environment, neighborhood and area, so I can tell you that he really, really likes going on long walks. He gets along famously with Kenzie (his new sister) although I do feed them in separate areas of the house. Like many of the Huskies I've had - wolfs food down one day but won't look at it the next. I've made appointments for him with the Vet and the groomer but he already looks clean and healthy. I will have him chipped during his Vet visit.

Freyja

She’s absolutely amazing! My boys love her and they have a ball together.

Blu

UPDATE: Blu is a young strong, active dog. He was deeply loved by his former owner. Being a senior lady with lots of responsibilities, she couldn’t give him the attention and exercise he needed. Blu was starting to act out and nobody was happy. His owner reached out to Patriot in the summer of 2021 and gave us the opportunity to find him a more suitable home. Patriot was contacted by Phil and Maryann, two active, husky-savvy folks who were looking for a companion for their older dog, Laska. A meeting was set up and it was a match for all. They now go to the dog park every day where Blu loves to run with the other dogs. He has settled in nicely to the family’s daily routine and is a perfect companion for Laska. He’s getting a little training and we’re told that he’s one smart dog. Blu is no longer blue, but another happy tail! Sometimes, letting go is the ultimate act of kindness and love. Info from July 2021: Here is our two-year-old mixed Husky, Blue,” whom we adopted two weeks ago from a family in Mass. He’s a great pooch and gets along well with our long-established white mixed-Husky princess, Laska. (They both have blue eyes, but the new guy had been named Blu—the Italian spelling—by the previous owner, and we decided to keep the name—with a slight change in spelling.) Blue gets along with every dog he meets (at least so far) and has a gentle disposition. After two weeks with us, he has relaxed enough to release his inner goofiness, as demonstrated in the lower photo. He’s a gem. Best, Phil & Maryann Langdon New Haven, CT

Bandit

I officially adopted “Bandit”. Changed his name to Max immediately 😁. Two days so far and we are both adjusting in a positive direction. As he is still a puppy, you can imagine how much he chews! And swallows! I haven’t had a puppy in over thirty years but it is all coming back to me. He is so skinny and very aggressive about any kind of food. My dogs are not taking any crap, and Max seems to understand how much he can get away with. I am staying consistent and simple with my commands, and lavish with my praise. Whew, I am exhausted! He does not leave my side... I had to go to the store this morning and my mom said he sat at the window for a long time waiting. Anyway, so far, so good!

Lena -Adopted April 2020

Hi - I'm Lena! I am happily settled in to my new home with a great family! I am enjoying our long walks and have met many friends to play with in the neighborhood. I have even been able to be the "mystery reader" for my Mom's students at school. I read Balto to them. They loved the story!! I am so grateful to my new family for giving me a nice new home!!

Jager-Adopted Aug 2018

Aroooo! Woof! I am Jager, and I joined my new pack in August of 2018. It was a very difficult decision for my previous pack to give me up, because they really love me. In the end, it was this love, and commitment for me to have a happy life, that inspired them to find my new pack through PSHR. Don't worry though, my new mommy, and former mom really like each other. She sends pictures and updates so they can see that I am growing big and strong. My other mom recently visited to check on me, and it was fun. She was happy to see me in a good home with siblings to play with. I heard them say other visits will be planned. I now live with two big doggie brothers, Rex and Niak, my mommy and daddy, and my special boy. The rest of my pack, a doggie sister Khaleesi, and another doggie brother Kain (both PSHR pups), along with their mommy and daddy, only live ten minutes away. We see each other often for play dates, walks, and hikes; and I'm going to learn how to run obstacle course races with Khaleesi and Kain this October. As you can see, I'm a very busy boy!!!! I also live with three kitties, and a bunny, but mommy says I'm not allowed to chase them. My boy calls me his Goober, and I love our special walks together. My mommy calls me her little Jager Bot, even though I'm not so little. I love when I look at her with my baby blues, and she melts down to the floor and gives me scratches, kisses, and loves. It get's her every time!! When daddy comes home from work, I open the back door for Rex and Niak, and we meet him at the gate with wags, and woofs! I am a very lucky boy to have such a big loving pack. A dog's life sure is good!! Ahwhoooo!

Vader-Adopted May 2018

Ridley (aka Brady) and Vader came together to their new home in New Hampshire on May 30th, 2018. It's been a little over 6 months since the brothers came to live with our pack. We keep in touch with their original Mom and she gets to see how much they have grown and what adventures they have. At first it was a bit overwhelming to feel the presence of 6 huskies living in one home. After a few months everyone settled down and figured out their status in the pack. We soon figured out that husky proofing the house was needed. Vader is famous for his surveys of the counter, and Ridley has made great friends with the garbage can. We have had a few dog fights since they came to us. Each time it has been over food. Vader is very aggressive and sometimes picks on the old pup in the house. So we feed them in their crates and they are perfectly happy with that. Vader and Ridley will drink a whole bowl of water at meal time, of which much of the water goes on the floor. So we have a couple of bowls out. Their checkups at the vet have been good. It took Vader a long long time to give kisses on my chin. And one day he suddenly surprised me when he sat down and gave me his back. He was giving me his respect, so I gave him a butt scratch! Ridley and Vader have been introduced to recreational mushing. Vader doesn't like to go out at first. But when his brother goes out without him, then he wants to go! Vader is a wheel dog and Echo is doing a great job of training him how to behave. Vader has turned out to be an excellent sled dog too! They both seem to like riding in the dog box, and I built a custom one just so the two of them can ride together. At night, all the dogs take turns as to who gets to sleep on the bed with the Alphas. We cycle through so that each dog gets a night on the bed. They all get to come and go through doggie doors. Vader and Ridley have no problem climbing up the spiral staircase to my office and hang out on the futon during the day. The brothers have found our home the best place to be, and they love it!

Brady- Adopted May 2018

Ridley (aka Brady) and Vader came together to their new home in New Hampshire on May 30th, 2018. It's been a little over 6 months since the brothers came to live with our pack. We keep in touch with their original Mom and she gets to see how much they have grown and what adventures they have. At first it was a bit overwhelming to feel the presence of 6 huskies living in one home. After a few months everyone settled down and figured out there status in the pack. We soon figured out that husky proofing the house was needed. Ridley has made great friends with the garbage can. Ridley has cataracts. And for now he is being watched by a doggie ophthalmologist. We expanded our group play dog area so that there would be enough room for all the dogs to run and play. On occasion they get big bones to chew on and pumpkins, because well, they destroy everything else. They both are new to riding in a car, and it's tricky to take them for a ride. I have to be pretty careful to not let them get out. The brothers are still inseparable, but now one will go outside and play if the other doesn't want to. Ridley is in love with our couch. He really likes to sit up on the arm of the couch to prop himself up, like he is waiting to be served a drink or something. He also loves his belly rubbed. They both turned two in December. And they have grown since we adopted them. Vader doesn't eat as fast as he used to, but his brother Ridley needs a maze bowl to slow him down. Ridley lives for meal time, which is twice a day. Ridley and Vader have been introduced to recreational mushing. Ridley does pretty well, but he is still finding his stride and learning how to run well. They both seem to like riding in the dog box, and I built a custom one just so the two of them can ride together. At night, all the dogs take turns as to who gets to sleep on the bed with the Alphas. We cycle through so that each dog gets a night on the bed. They all get to come and go through doggie doors. Declan-Adopted Oct 2017

Hi, I'm Declan and I just celebrated my 2nd birthday in a new home! I was lucky enough to come from a loving first home and find a new one. My new family has always owned Huskies, so they understand me. They had lost their much-loved Jersey, also adopted from PSHR, after over 10 years together and decided to go the adoption route again. My first family trained me well and I have made a point of showing my good manners without letting anyone forget I am still a mischievous Husky with lots of energy and need for attention. My new home has a circular layout with two staircases and lots of dog toys...it's my own indoor playground! Other times, I'm just happy resting in one of the rooms watching others cook, work or watch TV. I've learned to play catch with a ball outdoors and new dad says I am good enough for the pros. I love my walks and sometimes on Sundays, we drive to Jamaica Pond where I am very well behaved around other people and their dogs. My new family and I thank PSHR for bringing us together!

Kaya-Adopted Feb 2017

Kaya is a 4 yr old affectionate female Siberian Husky from the Southeastern MA area. Unfortunately her family was moving to a new home that did not allow dogs. Her family was heartbroken, but they decided to reach out to Patriot Siberian Husky Rescue to help them find Kaya her new fur-ever Husky home. Along came just the right fit adoptive family; who were only a couple of towns away. They arranged to meet with Kaya on several occasions to spend quality time and walk her. She even had a sleepover weekend with her new prospective family. The transition of adoption went very smoothly recently and Kaya has shown great affection for her new family. She is quite the chatty vocal Husky we are told. Loves to sing and "Woo-Woo!" --- 2023 Pup-Date!!! ----- We realized after some searching that she was 5 when we got her, with a birthday sometime during the fall. Anyway, none of that matters she is doing GREAT. Still super chatty, in fact, she’s getting even more chatty. Kaya no longer looks for the open door to run, she actually stops at the door till I go through first, that’s something we learned at training. Of course, being a husky she never graduated training, but we learned a ton: come, stop, leave it, let’s go, and it created the bond we both needed. Kaya has a very individual relationship with my husband, son, and daughter, all funny and loving. It was fun to watch her realize that the basket of toys was hers, and she wasn’t in trouble for playing with everything. She knocks the basket over and throws everything around. Kaya chooses not to run anymore but we walk a ton. I can’t believe we’ve had her for 7 years! I could go on and on about her, we just love her. Thank you again 🐾💝

Zoey-Adopted Dec 2016

Zoey is a 3 yr old sweetheart female Siberian Husky that had moved with her military family from Texas to Massachusetts awhile ago. Unfortunately her family was being relocated again and they had not been able to find a new home where they could keep a dog. They were heartbroken about having to surrender her; but decided to search out a Breed Specific Rescue that could help them re-home Zoey to a husky savvy home where she could be happy. They contacted us at Patriot Siberian Husky Rescue and luckily before they had to move, we did find Zoey the perfect new fur-ever home. Zoey now has a Husky brother to hang out with everyday and play in their large fenced backyard. From the moment she met her new owners and furry brother, she knew it was meant to be!

Nova-Adopted Dec 2016

Sweet Nova is only 1 yr old and she started out in a bad situation tied up outside a tenement; day & night. Luckily an angel of a human took possession of her and contacted us to help her find Nova a new Fur-ever home. Along came just the right fit human family that fell in love with Nova instantly and adopted her right away. Now Nova has her own new family and currently lives up in beautiful New Hampshire and gets all the daily attention she so deserves!

LaLa-Adopted Nov 2016

LaLa is 9 years old and lived in Southern VT. Unfortunately her family that she loved so much, could no longer give her the exercise and attention that she needed due to hectic work schedules and family responsibilities. Luckily for her along came a great adopter who lives up in Northern VT. She now has a great new family and an Irish setter brother who she can always play with. They go on hikes and run in huge fields. She is ready to conquer those beautiful Green Mountains, lakes and streams!

Blue-Adopted April 2016

Hi my name is Balu (formerly Blue). I made the move from CT to my furever home in the White Mountains of NH a week ago - my new life is great!! I begin my mornings with a long walk with my new Mom and then I spend the day with my new Dad. I love my two feline brothers and my Schnoodle brother. This pic is with one of my feline brothers! This past week I met lots of new human and canine friends, hiked on the ski slopes and played in the snow, worked with Dad splitting firewood and stealing sticks, tried bikejorring, played A LOT of ball (I am an excellent retriever), explored the river, tried venison, adjusted to my new home and slept a lot. I've learned how to lay down and am perfecting walking on a leash. Phew!! I can't wait to go logging with Dad! Dad and Mom describe me as suprisingly mellow at times, playful, precocious, persistant, and a little sneaky. I'm also a lover boy who enjoyes being hugged and snuggled. Dad and Mom haven't had a husky in the house for a year, so they are up for the challenge. Dad adopted Kodiak from Patriot Siberian Husky Rescue about 15 years ago - he passed from old age last year and has big paws to fill. Kodiak was Bob's best friend and went everywhere with him (including multiple road trips across the country). Kodi went to work with Bob in the woods every day and enjoyed many miles of skijorring in the winter. He was a great companion and match for Bob and Kate enjoyed spoiling him rotten and breaking the rules in his older years (surprise...he was quite wild as a young husky). We are all very happy with our new pack and want to thank Patriot and Siberian Husky Club and Rescue of Southern New England for making another great match! We look forward to many exciting years together!

Emmett-Adopted Feb 2016

Hi! I wanted to check in and show you how happy I am to be in my new home. I have a great new home with a family that is able to spend a lot of time with me. I was at a shelter for about 3 months before I found my new forever home and they too, were very nice to me and I had daily walks with one of the staff who sure did like me! Thankfully, Patriot cross-posted me on their site and it helped me find my new home a little faster! And I bet I'm one of very few Sibes that will let my owner vacuum me to rid me of some of my shedding fur! I love it! I love a good brushing too though! Here in my picture, I'm very relaxed and while you can't see my beautiful eyes, they are blue!

Jax-Adopted Dec 2015

Woo-Woo-Woof!! Hey, My name is Jax and Patriot Siberian Husky Rescue just found me my new fur-ever home with some great humans! I am so happy it all worked out so well. Now I can settle in and get comfy. Here is an updated picture of me, 6 months later, enjoying my beautiful new back yard! I've settled in quite well and am loving my new home!

Iris-Adopted Sept 2015

I was living with a very nice family that just did not have the time for me. They did the right thing and Patriot Siberian Husky Rescue found me a terrific home with a family that loves outdoor activities like jogging and hiking. They are very loving family and I am so happy here. Who knows, maybe I'll loose a few pounds from all the jogging. HAHA.

Kote-Adopted Sept 2015

Hi. We are Kote and Lilo and have lived together our entire life. Wow, 6 years together and trying find us a good home that we can stay together is not easy. Our original owner loved us with all his heart and it was very difficult to let go but he did what was best for us. a home with more time and attention. We were so fortunate that Patriot Siberian Husky Rescue had a perfect home for us. Our new owner bought a new home, fenced off the yard for us and from day one, we had other neighbor dogs to play with. So Grammy comes by and checks on us when Dad is at work and we are rarely left alone for long periods of time. We like it here and plan to stay a long time.

Lightning aka Duncan-Adopted Aug 2015

Wow. Did I luck out. I don't think my new owner would put up with a puppy but I couldn't be happier. I love my home and they are such special people. All it takes a puppy face, they can't resist and I am spoiled. Oh,, and my new name is Duncan. Could they be San Antonio Spurs fans?

Sami-Adopted July 2015

PSHR is happy to announce that Sami has found her new forever home!!!! Sami had lost her siberian husky brother and wasn't happy. Her owners knew she needed another friend but couldn't take on another dog at this time in their lives. It wasn't easy for her owners to do what they knew in their hearts was the right thing for Sami, but they did it because they love her. Champ had lost his long time siberian husky companion and was lonely and needed a new friend. His owners knew he needed a new friend and were able to open their home and their hearts to another siberian husky. So now Sami is living with Champ and they are both starting new chapters in their lives. It's because of people like Champ's owners who made it possible for Sami's owners to make a hard decision and place their girl in her new loving home. Both happy dogs now have the new friend they both needed.

Marlee Brooke-Adopted March 2015

Marlee graced our family at the end of March 2015. She joined Stoli our 11 1/2 year old beautiful black & white Husky girl. Stoli was also a rescue from Patriot Siberian Rescue back in October 2004. She was 1 1/2 at the time. We have had several female huskies before. Azure, a black & white lived to 17. Blaze, a gray, white, tan lived to 13. Nikki, a black & white, died tragically at 3. Kadyn, a red & white, just passed away in October at the age of 10. Stoli and Kadyn were very close. When Marlee came Stoli started to perk up. We have a big yard and both girls enjoy walking the perimeter. They chase each other around the tree, stop, rest then change direction. Stoli has always been a big Husky "talker". Marlee was very quiet. It took about a month and Marlee "talked" too. Both were extremely vocal at dinner time! Marlee feels very comfortable "telling" me what she needs. The next door neighbor got a puppy. My girls run to the fence and sit and wait for her to come out. Marlee has been a joy but later in the year, she lost her new sister Stoli to old age.

Phoenix-Adopted March 2015

Hi. My name is Phoenix. I was a heartbroken boy who lost both my human parents and was staying with my Grandma. Though she loved me, I needed to be with a family that understood my breed and had the time to give me my much needed daily walks. And boy, did I luck out! This wonderful family came to meet me and immediately fell right in love with me! Well can you blame them I am quite handsome! I have an 11 year old human sister now who gives the best belly rubs and cuddles! I am so happy that I get to go on 4-5 mile hikes each day now! My new Mommy tells me it will keep me out of "trouble", something about a "tired husky is a happy husky"! I'm learning lots of new manners and tricks and have discovered I love this new place called "the beach"! I am extremely happy and am looking forward to many new adventures with my forever family!

Kira-Adopted Feb 2015

Hi - we're Kiba & Kira and we have settled in quite well and our new family loves having us with them in their home. Our new owners have described us as being:" very funny, a little naughty and very loving." We have brought many smiles and much laughter to them in the last few weeks - more than they ever expected!! Our new family says that ski-joring will need to wait for another year or so, though, as it sounds like we are just needing a bit more training on our leads. We don't want to be the cause of any mishaps to them!! We will just look forward to that, meanwhile, while enjoying our daily walks! We continue to entertain our new family who is enjoying each minute they spend with us! We're so glad for our new family!!

I feel like I'm in Husky Heaven, as not only did I get a new home with one acre of fenced property, but I was also so lucky to get 5 sister and brother huskies to play with everyday! I am in the middle in my picture, with 2 of my new siblings! I feel right now like one of the luckiest Sibes there could ever be!! I'm so thankful to my new owner!!

Nicky-Adopted Jan 2015

I'm Nicky, 10 years old. I'm so grateful to Patriot Siberian Husky Rescue for helping me to find a new forever home. You see, my owner passed away suddenly. My 'Auntie' graciously took me in so I would not have to go to a shelter while she tried to find me a new home. Luckily I did find new owners, who fell in love with me right away. Now I get my daily walks again and will be training with a dogsled soon!

Hugo-Adopted Dec 2014

Hi - I'm Hugo! And a few weeks ago, I had to go to this place called a shelter with other dogs of all kinds, as my human family could no longer keep me. I was afraid that my brother, Klondike & I may be separated, if we were lucky enough to find new homes. Then we went to another human's home, for a while till we could find a 'furever' home. Along came this great new couple, who adopted not just me, but Klondike too! We are now getting to live out the rest of our lives with this great new family!! We are so grateful to the shelter and to Patriot for matching us up with this great family! Love, Hugo!!

Klondike-Adopted Dec 2014

Niko-Adopted Aug 2014

We adopted Niko last summer(Aug 2014), we had moved a few months earlier and our nine year old husky Zayda was having a very difficult time with the move. We tried everything, nothing helped, so we decided to rescue another dog. At first Zayda was a little upset but shortly after she started acting like her self again. It was almost like she could finally relax because Niko was there to protect her. Niko has been such a great addition to our family. He loves to play with his sister and cousins ( two beagles, a chihuahua and a Shepherd). He loves to go for car rides, walk in the woods , and even just hang out in the back yard. Oh and of course he LOVES the snow!!! We are so happy we rescued him, he is a great dog. He makes us laugh!!

Storm & Sky-Adopted Aug 2014

Storm and Sky were bonded pair of 8 year old siblings that were on the PSHR website for almost a year. When they were 9 years old, a nice man adopted them and they began a new adventure. At first, they didn't like the nice man because they didn't understand why they had left their previous family. But, slowly and with lots of love and patience, the nice man won them over. Then, as huskies do, they took over the house and convinced their owner to cook them fresh meat every day. The nice man didn't mind because he loved them. They slept in the nice man's bed and went for hundreds of walks in Acadia National Park, trotting through the snow, climbing mountains, and drinking from streams. Wherever they went, they were treated like rock stars and everyone commented on how beautiful and majestic they were. As they grew older, they slowed down and gradually became elderly dogs. Storm and Sky passed within 2 months of each other at the age of 13. And the nice man missed them very much but has no regrets about adopting 2 older dogs. They were amazing. Run free forever, Storm and Sky.
