George & Gracie (formerly Dakota & Nikki)

What a handsome pair! Each was adopted at different times. George a.k.a. Dakota was adopted first, and when he seemed to need a friend, Gracie a.k.a. Nikki was introduced. Nikki's name was changed to Gracie... In John, her new owner's words, "I mean, if your male dog is named George, your only logical name choices for a female are either 'Martha' or 'Gracie', and I'm more the humorist than the politician." The match has been especially good for Gracie as she was somewhat shy at first. Since being with George, sharing the same energy level and following his lead, she has gotten beyond her shyness.

John tells us, "Gracie seems to have already become fully settled in. She routinely climbs into my lap... especially when I'm trying to type something. If I pass by where she's lying down, she'll roll over to invite a belly rub, and she's even become so comfortable as to chew up two of my paperbacks!

The novelty of having another dog around to play with seems to have worn off for both her and George, as they now only spend about 7 hours a day crashing around....that's down from 12 or so. But it doesn't include the time they spend tearing around in the pen. Their "down" time is more or less evenly divided between begging for more Milk Bones, and resting up for the next round of playtime.

Gracie has shown herself to be the smarter and/or more adventurous of the two, as it only took her three days to discover that she could jump up onto the roof of the doghouse, requiring me to raise the height of the fence. It would have been an easy jump from there to get out of the pen if she could have gotten solid enough footing to jump at all. George tried to follow her up, but didn't seem to be able to make it.

Chew toys are holding up suprisingly well....the lastest rope is still intact after three days, which is a new record....despite the fact that they seem to enjoy using them for playing tug-of-war. The only noticeable damage so far is that one of Gracie's original sqeakers has lost an ear. Gracie is a great dog - a real cutie - and blue eyes to die for. Thanks so much for letting her join us."
